When she isn’t working, you’ll likely find her on a trail or at the theater. We intentionally include art in our Do Science approach to our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) programs and experiences because art gives people the freedom to harness the capabilities of the other STEAM subjects. And we are always happy to support our Louisville Metro partners like TARC who are providing access to our Kentucky Science Center to more and more community members each day,” Kentucky Science Center CEO Mike Norman said. Her design experience ranges from small-scale projects like rain gardens, native planting plans, and outdoor classrooms to larger scaled projects like regional trails, green infrastructure master plans, and city parks. In Media Arts and Design from James Madison University, and later her Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Maryland. Lubna Chaudhry is a former intern, and volunteer turned Project Manager for Architecture and Interiors projects at NDC. As a start, we hypothesized that by reusing the existing buildings, by treating them with respect and affection, we would, in a sense, be communicating respect for the neighborhood as a whole. Inside the buildings, we created an environment to showcase our client’s furniture, which was fabricated onsite using the same materials and strategies that we used outside. No one defaced or graffiti-ed a single square inch, in a neighborhood that is regularly vandalized.

“You are most distinguished by your thunderous silence” in the face of urban disintegration, he challenged. “You share responsibility for the mess we are in terms of the white noose around the central city. It was carefully planned.” His words were not comforting, nor were they meant to be. From Young’s speech sprang a national call to action among architects, and nonprofit “design centers” opened in cities across the United States. Published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Community Psychology, this research article (2021) investigates the profound impact that green spaces, playgrounds, and other community-level interventions have on our health. After two years of community listening, analysis, and design, we compiled our findings and recommendations for bringing creative, collaborative light to Station North — and beyond!

In the fall of that same year, a group of architects in Baltimore took this challenge and began working with low and moderate income communities to rebuild after the riots and white flight that swept the city in the wake of Martin Luther King’s assassination. Catharine has a background in Fine Art but is currently working toward her Bachelor's of Science degree in Environmental Management. The North East Housing Initiative is just one of our amazing partners, but a great example of how the Neighborhood Design Center helps all voices to be heard and provides the tools, plans, and connections to help communites achieve their neighborhood dreams. We work with communities on plans that maximize safety for all, enhance ecological functions and economic appeal of the streetscape, and create great, dynamic streets that reflect their respective communities. Depending on community needs, plans may address sidewalks, bicycle lanes, bus lanes, public transportation stops, crossing opportunities, median islands, and more.
